This course includes on-demand access to the film Belly of the Beast, an acclaimed documentary capturing the ongoing pattern of illegal sterilizations in women’s prisons, featuring intimate accounts from currently and formerly incarcerated people. Also included in this course is a podcast featuring expert panelists exploring the themes of the film and a discussion guide for the film, designed for use with clinicians-in-training. Learners can earn up to 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for completing all activities.


Physicians: The Society of Family Planning is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Society of Family Planning designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe systemic factors which contribute to the differential mistreatment and abuse of patients.
2. Understand reproductive justice and reproductive autonomy as frameworks for identifying and mitigating abuse and mistreatment in medicine.
3. Identify practical and immediate steps providers can take to address mistreatment, coercion, and abuse in their practice environments.
4. Consider the role of education, activism, and advocacy within their own environments to expand opportunities for equitable, just treatment of patients.
