These three, 35-45-minute sessions provide those in their final year of training and 1-3 years out of training, interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine insight into academic and hybrid positions, suggestions on job searching and deciphering job descriptions, and tips on crafting CVs, interviewing, and negotiating.

Society members in their final year of training, and those 1-3 years out of training, interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine are invited to join the 2023 Career development series. This hybrid series is comprised of three, 35-45-minute recorded sessions, and six live sessions. The three recorded and live sessions are led by faculty members Glenmarie Matthews, MD, MBA, MS and Jessica Tarleton, MD, MPH. 

The session topics are listed below. 

  • Recorded session 1: Understanding the structure of academic careers and hybrid positions (35 mins)
  • Live session 1: August 3, 12:00-1:30 pm PT/3:00-4:30 pm ET: Q&A session and Ryan Residency team presentation 
  • Recorded session 2: Job searching, deciphering job descriptions, CV prep (45 mins)
  • Live session 2: August 10, 1:00-2:00 pm PT/4:00-5:00 pm ET: Q&A session
  • Recorded session 3: Interview tips, salary negotiation (45 mins) 
  • Live session 3: August 28, 1:00-2:00 pm PT/4:00-5:00 pm ET: Interview demos and preparation/Q&A session 

In addition to the hybrid series, the Society will also be offering the following career development sessions this fall: 

  • September 13, 12:00-1:00 pm PT/3:00-4:00 pm ET: Setting and maintaining boundaries
  • September 18, 11:00-1:00 pm PT/2:00-4:00 pm ET: Career opportunities for family planning clinicians
  • Date forthcoming: Department Chairs’ panel 
Society members in their final year of training, and those 1-3 years out of training, interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the structure of academic careers.
  • Understand the components of a hybrid position.
  • Identify the benefits of working in an academic hybrid position.
  • Name at least three websites/resources to locate job postings.
  • Develop my CV according to best practices.
  • Analyze posted job opportunities to understand title and expected work duties.
  • Employ techniques when responding to challenging interview questions.
  • Compare a salary offer to the job expectations and respond/negotiate accordingly.
  • Identify at least three skills to highlight during job interviews.
